Thursday 13 - 24th Edition - Things I’ve Noticed About Blogging

I’ve been blogging since 2001. I originally started on LJ, and worked my way over to self-hosting. I have to say that I love it.
But, with it, you learn a few things. ) Here are thirteen things I’ve learned )

Thirteen Things I’ve Learned About Blogging

  • Even if you’re not a steady blogger, you’ll get a few followers. I’m finding that out with Random Amusements
  • If you mention your politics, you’re bound to lose a few readers. I don’t completely understand that, but I went from 43 readers yesterday before I posted about the free Obama buttons, to about 25 now. Coincidence? I think now, lol .
  • Putting yourself out there can be harmful in some ways. Because I use my real name, a few “stalkers” have come out of the woodwork. *shrugs* Part of life.
  • Putting yourself out there can also be a good thing. I’ve made some real friends while blogging, including one that’s going to be a bridesmaid at my wedding
  • Some people just will not like what you write, no matter what. It’s a part of life.
  • Some people will just comment to comment. They like to see their name in print, I guess.
  • With blogging comes spammers. The more spammers you get? Usually means the more popular you are. At least that’s how I take it, xD.
  • Certain keywords attract spammers like flies to honey. Sex, pr0n, and the like are big ones, along with celebrity names.
  • Adults tend to not act like adults in certain situations and turn into bratty toddlers if provoked. Then again, that’s true in the real world as well.
  • If you’re in blogging for the money, you won’t make a dime. If you’re in it for the fun of it? You’re more likely to make some easy cash )
  • Google is both your friend and your foe. Learn to live with it. )
  • A feedreader is your friend! Get one! ) I personally use FeedReader, a desktop application. it was suggested by Katy awhile ago, and finally was able to get it to work ;) It didn’t like our tower, lol .

Time for that song of the moment, lol . Yes, I’m proud to say I’m a freaking Trekkie ) Kiss my white butt, xD )

You Are My Sunshine

You Are My Sunshine
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You’ll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don’t take my sunshine away

The other nite, dear,
As I lay sleeping
I dreamed I held you in my arms.
When I awoke, dear,
I was mistaken
And I hung my head and cried.

You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You’ll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don’t take my sunshine away.

I’ll always love you
And make you happy
If you will only say the same
But if you leave me
To love another
You’ll regret it all some day;

You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You’ll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don’t take my sunshine away.

You told me once, dear
You really loved me
And no one else could come between
But now you’ve left me
And love another
You have shattered all my dreams;

You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You’ll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don’t take my sunshine away.

Louisiana my Louisiana
the place where I was borne.
White fields of cotton
– green fields clover,
the best fishing
and long tall corn;

You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You’ll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don’t take my sunshine away.
Crawfish gumbo and jambalaya
the biggest shrimp and sugar cane,
the finest oysters
and sweet strawberries
from Toledo Bend to New Orleans;

You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You’ll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don’t take my sunshine away.

    You could also get some readers when you blog about politics from those who share your views. Some good points here for a relatively newbie who started in 2005.

    Is the trekie video part of the TT? I couldn’t see where else to comment.

    You speak truths.

  3. Sarah on July 24, 2008 10:54 am

    @Colleen
    I seem to lose more than gain when I mention my politics, xD, but I’m not too worried about it, because for me, my politics is part of what makes me me )

    Yeah, the video is part of TT. I do a “Song of the Moment” each Thursday )

    My thought? If you don’t ENJOY blogging, don’t do it! :-)

  5. Marianne Arkins on July 24, 2008 11:00 am

    I didn’t do TT this week, but am still flitting about! LOL…

    I have two rules on my blog: no politics and no religion. Period. And, I’ll be honest, I’ve stopped reading blogs when they’ve been too overbearing about either, sometimes even when I agree with them.

    Happy Thursday!

    @ Robin
    Thanks )

    @Mysti Holiday
    I never said I don’t enjoy blogging o.o

    @Marianne Arkins
    I don’t think I’m overbearing with them. Three posts in a month about politics. The Obama buttons one was the first time I saw the count go down that much before, when it comes to feed counts.
    To each their own, I guess.

    I rarely, rarely touch politics. But I do have a reader that I correspond with who is my polar opposite, and it is fun for both of us.
    But religion? It is who I am, so I post it when I feel like it.
    The key words are horrible sometimes! I get several hits a week on spanking peed pants variations. Sickos!

    @Qtpies7
    I don’t do indepth discussions, just random bits and pieces here and there. )

    I get some seriously messed up and raunchy ones at times. Scary, in fact (

  9. Maggie's Mind on July 25, 2008 2:02 am

    So very true! I tend to stay away from certain topics, but it’s more a privacy thing. It’s amazing the wonderful people you meet blogging. I got serious about blogging when I quit smoking last year (and only sporadic blogging before that), and the support has been incredible. Great list for a 13!

  10. Sarah on July 25, 2008 10:32 pm

    @ Maggie’s Mind
    Thanks. ) I’m glad you found the support you needed. Quitting smoking is not an easy thing to do, and having support makes it a lot easier.
