I’m Not Very Earth Conscious

Lotus came up with an awesome way of raising awareness on being more “green” with the environment. While I admit I’m not the most green person around, I do my best, and try to work with what I’ve got.

  • While I do have a gas-guzzling SUV, it only gets driven once or twice a week, on average.
We’ve had it for 2 1/2 months, and have only put about 600 miles on it. Considering the average use for a vehicle is 1000 miles a month (12,000 a year), only doing about 250-300 is pretty darn good )
  • The appliances we were able to choose, most are energy-efficient
Heck, even my laptop has the lovely energy star label on it. Our old tower did as well.
  • Every single one of our bulbs, except for one, are the energy efficient ones, where it uses less electricity, which means less pull on resources already in high demand, besides just saving us money
  • Our dishwasher has to be “cleaned” often, but instead of using the dishwasher cleaner that’s like $5 a pop, we use vinegar
It’s cost effective ($2 for a large bottle … not bad), plus it’s a natural cleaner and deodorizer, and works GREAT!! In the past month, I’ve only had to use it TWICE, rather than 4 times like before.

I know that’s not the most impressive list, but the biggest problem with us is that our complex doesn’t listen to us when we make complaints about certain things.

1. Our dishwasher leaks (BAD), but they won’t come and check it.
2. Our master bath toilet runs CONSTANTLY, but as soon as the maintenance person walks in, it’s not, and they just go “well, it’s not running now”

I know, I know, excuses, excuses.

The good news is that our fuel-efficient vehicle is the one getting all the miles. Josh drives 45 miles one-way. That uses about a gallon and a half of gas. That’s a cost-saver for us, and while he’d prefer not driving that distance, there’s no way we can afford a $200,000 house by moving to Lawrence.

Now, n

Apartment managers really don’t care as long as their own bills aren’t going up. When we live in FL we knew there was some major duct leakage, our electric bill was about $300 for a small apartment. But they would do nothing, they said if we wanted to do something about the ducts we’d have to do it ourselves, as they don’t pay the electric bill.

@ Marie :: Florida must just be like that, then, because we had a huge mold problem with our complex when we lived there (biggest reason we got the heck out of dodge and moved to Kansas was that apartment, and the fact that we couldn’t afford anything better). They would do nothing, and thought that just painting over it would fix the problem o.O

I can’t imagine a $300 electric bill. Even at the hottest part of the summer, our electric was never more than $150, and that’s living in Orlando. YIKES!

Every little bit counts, so never think that what you’re doing is small, and never stop thinking what other small things you can add. ;-)

@ Sarcastic Mom :: We’ve definitely got a few ideas on how to be more green, but sadly, a good portion have to wait. It’s sad that being green costs an arm and a leg, yet the easiest way to destroy the Earth is the cheapest o.O
